HKUST President Prof Paul Chu has been appointed to the US President's Committee on the National Medal of Science to select and recommend to the US President the recipients of the highest honor for scientific achievement in the US. Prof Chu is the few Chinese scientists ever to be appointed to the President's Committee since the establishment of the National Medal of Science by the US Congress in 1959. Hailed as the United States' equivalent of the Nobel Prize, the National Medal of Science is awarded by the US President on an annual basis to honor the contributions made by outstanding scientists who have significantly advanced knowledge in the fields of physics, biology, mathematics, engineering, and sociology and other behavioral sciences.

Four HKUST students on the Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management (T&M) have developed a business proposal on trucking logistics in Mainland China through using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies. The proposal has won very high acclaim from two international enterprises which sponsored the project. Sponsored by Orient Overseas Container Line Limited (OOCL) and Sun Microsystems of California Limited (SUN), the project is part of the Enrichment Program designed to provide T&M students with real life business exposure.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of HKUST will, for the first time, join hands with Lenovo and Microsoft to launch "Student Computer Subsidy Program" this year.

HKUST will increase its scholarship offers for students admitted under JUPAS who excel in either academic or non-academic fields. Announcing HKUST's new JUPAS scholarship scheme, Vice-President for Academic Affairs (Acting) Prof Roland Chin said that students receiving the highest scholarship award will enjoy full subsidy, including tuition fees and living allowances totaling HK$100,000 a year. With generous support from members of the community, these rich scholarship schemes are intended to attract outstanding students, including those admitted through JUPAS, EAS (Early Admission Scheme) and Direct Entry. They are also extended to students who are actively serving the community, or students with special non-academic talents and performance. These scholarships are meant to enable them to develop their potential to the fullest.

In response to media enquiries on the appointment of Prof KC Chan as Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, HKUST President Prof Paul Chu made the following statement: "In his move from the campus to the cabinet, Prof KC Chan's scholarly insight, considerable talents and expertise will be given full play in a bigger arena, for a larger cause and in the wider interest of the community. Hong Kong's gain far outweighs HKUST's loss. On behalf of all students and colleagues at HKUST, I wish to convey to Prof Chan our very best wishes in his new mission." The HKUST today also announced the appointment of Prof Leonard Kwok Hon Cheng as Acting Dean of the School of Business and Management, pending a world-wide search to fill the vacancy left by Prof Chan. Prof Paul Chu is gratified that at this very challenging time, Prof Cheng has readily agreed to step up to the challenge.

A professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has earned global recognition in the field of water engineering and environmental fluid mechanics. Prof Mohamed S Ghidaoui of the HKUST's Department of Civil Engineering has been selected the winner of 2007 Arthur Thomas Ippen Award by the International Association of Hydraulic Engineering & Research (IAHR). The award will be presented next month at the IAHR Congress in Venice, where Prof Ghidaoui will also deliver the Ippen Award Lecture. The lecture will then be published in the Journal of Hydraulic Research of IAHR. The award is the most prestigious prize that the association bestows on a member of the water engineering and science community. This is also only the second time the award has been won by an Asia-based researcher since the prize was established in 1977.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Thursday) confers Honorary Fellowship on four distinguished community leaders in recognition of their contributions to the University and the community. The four are: Dr Chan Man-Hung, Mr Lester G Huang, Mr Humphrey Leung Kwong-Wai, and Dr Lawrence Tsi-Kong Wong. HKUST Pro-Chancellor Dr the Honorable Sir Sze-Yuen Chung, Council Chairman Dr John Chan, and President Paul Chu officiated at the presentation ceremony.
