Partnership between industry and the academia will play a critical role in underpinning the new economy as governments in leading economies turn to scientific and technological research as an engine of growth in the face of financial tsunami, according to Prof Matthew Yuen, Acting Vice-President for Research and Development at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Speaking at a technical conference in Taiwan - the AMD Technology Forum and Exhibit, Prof Yuen noted that one highly unanticipated outcome of the financial tsunami is that governments turn to increasing research funding to enhance their competitiveness. The G8 countries are pumping extra cash into areas such as energy exploration and medical research. He said that the recent G20 meeting in Pittsburgh epitomized the dawn of the New Economy as the globalized G20, evolved from G8, was designated as the premier forum for international economic cooperation.

The Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA (EMBA) program has surpassed all leading institutions in the world as it has once again been ranked no. 1 by the Financial Times 2009 EMBA global rankings.The success of the part-time Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program is largely attributed to the superb career track records of the graduating class in 2006 and their geographical diversity in terms of nationality and overseas working experience. The program is jointly offered by Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

香 港 科 技 大 學 副 校 長 黃 玉 山 教 授 今 天 （ 2009 年 10 月 16 日 ） 表 示 ： 香 港 的 年 青 人 往 往 只 看 到 科 學 的 「 工 具 價 值 」 ， 而 忽 略 了 科 學 的 「 精 神 價 值 」 。 「 在 我 們 學 校 的 課 程 裡 ， 除 了 涉 獵 具 體 的 科 學 知 識 外 ， 更 應 該 在 同 學 們 心 中 樹 立 科 學 的 精 神 價 值 ， 使 我 們 對 科 學 能 夠 有 一 個 更 全 面 、 更 確 切 的 理 解 ， 」 黃 教 授 說 。 黃 玉 山 教 授 今 天 出 席 博 愛 醫 院 八 十 周 年 鄧 英 喜 中 學 建 校 十 周 年 紀 念 儀 式 時 ， 向 全 校 師 生 作 出 以 上 呼 籲 。 黃 教 授 表 示 ： 科 學 對 人 類 的 價 值 大 概 可 以 分 為 「 工 具 價 值 」 與 「 精 神 價 值 」 。 科 學 的 「 工 具 價 值 」 很 明 確 ， 它 經 常 可 以 很 具 體 地 改 善 我 們 物 質 的 生 活 。 我 們 身 邊 的 許 多 重 要 用 品 及 技 術 ， 比 如 電 腦 、 互 聯 網 、 遺 傳 工 程 、 核 電 、 無 線 電 話 、 電 視 等 ， 都 是 近 幾 十 年 才 發 明 的 新 生 事 物 。 高 錕 教 授 發 明 的 光 纖 ， 就 是 一 個 很 好 的 例 子 ， 沒 有 光 纖 ， 就 沒 有 今 天 的 衛 星 通 訊 ， 也 就 沒 有 今 天 的 互 聯 網 。 假 如 不 是 因 為 科 學 為 人 類 帶 來 這 些 創 造 及 發 明 ， 今 天 我 們 的 生 活 及 工 作 就 不 可 想 像 。

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) is delighted that its MBA program has for four years in a row been ranked top in Asia and Hong Kong by The Economist.A similar proportion of the graduates, 56.7% of them are employed in the financial/ banking sector this year, compared to 56.3% in 2008 notwithstanding cautious hiring decisions and widespread headcount freeze in the hard-hit industry. According to data collected by HKUST's Career Office earlier, 93% of the students have secured an offer within three months after graduation.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) today (12 October 2009) announced a new program of collaborative research and postgraduate training in the humanities and social sciences to create innovative international and interdisciplinary connections among scholars and students researching topics related to China. The multi-year workshop and conference project program, to be organized by HKUST's School of Humanities and Social Science and UCLA's Asia Institute starting 2010, will form the foundation of broader networks of scholars at HKUST, UCLA and beyond who share related research interests. All HKUST and UCLA professorial faculty are eligible to apply and each project should be led by two Principal Investigators (PIs), one from each university.

The international Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) has bestowed the Distinguished Early Career Contributions Award on HKUST Management Professor Riki Takeuchi.  The award is given to an individual who makes important contributions to the science and/or practice of industrial-organizational psychology within seven years of receiving their PhD degree. The SIOP is an international organization based in Ohio, the US and is also a division within the American Psychological Association (est.1892) and an organizational affiliate of the American Psychological Society (est. 1988).  Prof. Takeuchi graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, in December 2003 and since then he has published or has in press 14 high quality papers in top-tier journals. He is the first (principal) author of eight of these papers.

本 港 八 家 大 專 院 校 的 師 生 ， 將 首 度 攜 手 合 作 ， 於 「 大 專 粵 劇 推 廣 計 劃 」 的 結 業 演 出 中 同 台 粉 墨 登 場 ， 成 為 本 港 粵 劇 史 上 的 創 舉 。 「 大 專 粵 劇 推 廣 計 劃 」 由 香 港 科 技 大 學 （ 科 大 ） 藝 術 中 心 主 辦 ， 旨 在 提 高 全 港 大 專 院 校 同 學 和 教 職 員 對 粵 劇 的 認 識 和 欣 賞 。 它 是 全 港 首 個 惠 及 所 有 大 專 院 校 的 粵 劇 推 廣 計 劃 。 計 劃 於 去 年 9 月 推 出 ， 為 期 一 年 ； 活 動 包 括 工 作 坊 、 示 範 講 座 、 粵 劇 演 出 及 攝 影 比 賽 。 計 劃 吸 引 了 來 自 10 家 本 港 大 專 院 校 的 22 位 學 生 及 12 位 教 職 員 參 加 。 經 過 一 年 的 學 習 和 排 演 ， 其 中 來 自 8 家 大 專 學 府 的7位 學 生 和7位 教 職 員 將 於 9 月 27 日(星 期 日) 晚 上 7 時 半 在 紅 磡 高 山 劇 場 舉 行 的 結 業 演 出 中 登 場 。 這 8 家 院 校 為 香 港 科 技 大 學 、 香 港 大 學 、 香 港 中 文 大 學 、 香 港 理 工 大 學 、 香 港 浸 會 大 學 、 香 港 樹 仁 大 學 、 香 港 教 育 學 院 ， 以 及 香 港 專 業 教 育 學 院 。 他 們 將 與 導 師 鄭 詠 梅 、 兩 位 客 席 導 師 袁 纓 華 和 陳 金 城 ， 以 及 兩 位 演 出 嘉 賓 洪 海 和 江 駿 傑 共 同 演 出 五 套 粵 劇 折 子 戲 ： 帝 女 花 之 香 夭 、 紫 釵 記 之 拾 釵 、 紅 樓 夢 之 洞 房 怨 婚 、 鳳 閣 恩 仇 未 了 情 ， 以 及 再 世 紅 梅 記 之 脫 阱 救 裴 。 For media enquiries, please feel free to contact : Ross Lai
