The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held its 19th Congregation today (18 November) and conferred honorary doctorates on four eminent academics and community leaders. Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Government and HKUST's Chancellor, the Hon Donald Tsang presided over today's ceremony. HKUST's honorary doctorates are awarded to four outstanding individuals in recognition of their distinguished achievements and contributions. This year's recipients are: Dr Simon Ip Sik On, CBE, JP, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Stewards of the Hong Kong Jockey Club - Doctor of Laws honoris causa The Hon Elsie Leung Oi Sie, GBM, JP, the former Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong SAR Government - Doctor of Laws honoris causa

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) School of Engineering is hosting the "Bring Technology to Community" exhibition at Hong Kong Science Museum starting from today till 30 October 2011. The exhibition features the innovative works and research achievements of the School's students, professors and alumni. A majority of the exhibits are showcased to the public for the first time. Admission is free. The School welcomes members of the public to come and visit the exhibition. The exhibition is one of the celebratory events for the HKUST 20th anniversary. Demonstrating HKUST's commitment to contribute to the society with technology, the School of Engineering organizes this exhibition to bring technology to society and widen the public's horizons on technology. The exhibition also aims to raise the public's awareness of the close connection between innovations and daily lives, and how technology brings convenience to them.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the first Asia Regional Jamboree of the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM), an undergraduate Synthetic Biology competition launched by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2003. Over 40 teams from universities in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, India and Australia have just gathered at HKUST and participated in the event. HKUST team has been selected as one of the 18 teams going to MIT for the final competition in November and has also won the Best Presentation Award in the Asia Regional Jamboree for its outstanding performance.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the UC RUSAL President's Forum today (14 October) during which Dr. Jim O'Neill, Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management and creator of the acronym 'BRICs', spoke on 'The Changing Dynamics of the World' with an enthusiastic audience.At the Forum and subsequent dialogue with HKUST President Prof. Tony F Chan, Dr. O'Neill elaborated on the changing dynamics of the world's economy and the rapid rise of the BRICs nations. Contrary to popular views which are often pessimistic, Dr. O'Neill suggested that the rise of BRICs, namely Brazil, Russia, India and Mainland China and their involvement in the global economy will lead to prosperity not only for the BRICs themselves but for countries across the globe.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (24 June) conferred Honorary Fellowships on four distinguished leaders in recognition of their contributions. Dr the Honorable Sir Sze-Yuen Chung, Pro-Chancellor, Dr the Honorable Marvin Cheung, Council Chairman, and Prof Tony F Chan, President, of HKUST officiated at the conferment ceremony. The recipients of the 2011 Honorary Fellowships are: Dr Fong Yun-Wah, Prof Roger King, Ir James Kwan, and Prof Harry Shum. Their brief biographies are set out below:

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) joins hands with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute to launch the first IEEE Technology Time Machine (TTM) Symposium for three days from 1 June. Themed "Technologies beyond 2020", the TTM Symposium covers a selected set of potentially high impact emerging technologies as well as their current state of maturity and scenarios for the future.

The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) holds a three-day "Conference on Cosmology since Einstein" starting from 30 May 2011 at which world top scientists including a Nobel Laureate explore the most up-to-date developments and challenges of cosmology. This conference has brought together 24 top cosmologists and relativists from China, Japan, France, Switzerland, the U.K. and U.S to share as speakers their insights and latest research findings on cosmological theories. Distinguished speakers like Prof David Gross, 2004 Nobel Laureate in Physics and Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara, spoke on "Cosmological Challenges - The View of a String Theorist".

The School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has held its first professional development day for secondary school teachers, with the objective of providing teachers with insights into innovative technology. Over 70 science teachers from 6 secondary schools under the English Schools Foundation (ESF), Hong Kong's largest international schools network, participated in this full-day event on HKUST campus. The teachers were first welcomed by Provost Prof Wei Shyy, followed by a presentation on the School of Engineering by Dean Khaled Ben Letaief. Teachers were then divided into two groups - Physical Sciences and Life Sciences - to attend half-hour inspirational talks delivered by faculty members on topics like "The New Mobile Generation", "Terahertz Imaging", "Information Visualization" and "Drug Delivery Technology", "Green Building" "Neuro Network Computing", "Wind Energy" and "Hygiene Monitoring: Smart Coating".
